Wow, is it just me or has Pitchfork been rating music a little bit more accurately as of late? I’ve been noticing a trend all year of more “accurately” rated albums on the site. Maybe they’re over their “we’ve got something to prove” phase and are actually rating things the way the rest of us would agree.

I put accurately in quotes up there because reviews are just well-formed opinions anyway and no opinion is ever really right or wrong it’s just more or less accepted by a group of people.

Les Savy Fav - Let’s Stay Friends
Pitchfork gave it an 8.3
Love all the songs I’ve heard so far especially “The Year before 2000″ and “What Would Wolves Do”. But, I’m a Les Savy Fav fan and they can pretty much do no wrong in my head anyway.

The Go Team - Proof of Youth
Pitchfork gave it a 7.2
I’ve only heard two songs from this album as well, but I like The Go Team and chances are they’ve made a solid album here. Yep, that’s an educated guess my friend. But these kids are always pleasing to my ears.

Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals
Pitchfork gave it a 7.8
Every song I’ve heard I’ve been practically blown away by. This is my favorite new band of 2007!!! Except maybe for Black Kids (see below).

Kanye West - Graduation
Pitchfork gave it an 8.7
I agree, although maybe I’d rate even a little higher because it’s been a long time since I heard an album where every single song is pretty much a hit song.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Is Is
Pitchfork gave it an 8.2
I’m burning a whole in this EP. A huge HOLE! Hey guys, since it’s an EP, it’s a good way for you to find out if you like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs if you’ve never tried them before (EPs are like a sampler and they usually cost about half the price of a full length album). I hit repeat on this baby several times a week still.

Black Kids - Wizard of Ahhhs
Pitchfork rated is an 8.4
This is my other favorite band of 2007!!! They’re a throw back to late 90s / earlier 2000s indie rock. Pretty lo-fi with a punch of synth keyboards. They’re like a mix of early The Shins and The Go Team. Plus, I like songs that have more than one person singing and they do this well with each other. As do my other favorite 2007 band Yeasayer (see above).

I’m sure Pitchfork will throw in their curve balls once in a while and rate something spectacular a 2.1 and something awful a 9.7, but for now I’m along for the ride.

Happy Halloween

October 31, 2007

Even as an adult it’s fun to dress up.

Whatever you do don’t watch Sleepy Hollow (the movie directed by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci). I watched it last night and it sucks. Tonight, I’ll watch 3 Women tonight which is inherently creepier for some reason even though it’s not a horror movie.

Trick or treat!

It’s cold today and I had to wear a sweater to work. My fingers are cold as I type because that’s what stays cold when the temperature dips down.

I’ve been planning my Halloween costume for a party this Saturday, too. I decided to go with my own invention… “Little Goth Riding Hood.” The idea is little red riding hood had enough of feeling like a punk a$$ biatch and decided she’d get tough (even if it is only apparel deep). So she’s got a major attitude, wears all black and carries around black (spray painted) toys in her basket. This costume has got just the right amount of cheekiness, macabre, and irony to make a lasting impression.

Hopefully pictures will follow, but who really knows. Stay tuned.

So, I’m not a full-blown running addict, but my goal is to become a regular runner– running at least 5 times a week. I’ve been working on this goal for about 1/2 the year so far and things are progressing well. Although, I’ve had a recent setback where I didn’t run for 5 weeks because I “wasn’t feeling it”.

After this 5-week non-running stint I picked it back up last Friday because I want to reach my goal and keep at it for like ever (or as long as I’m able to run within my lifetime). I only ran a little bit since I knew I’d be feeling sore the next day. Boy was I wrong!

It’s Monday and my left quad is still really sore. Yesterday, it kept giving me spasms and I did stretch it out though it was still painful. I think the main thing that happened to cause all the soreness was:

1. Out of practice since I hadn’t run in 5 weeks
2. I did a set of 20 major, deep squats that really works that muscle
3. Lack of water/proper stretching afterwards
4. 26 years does not equal 16 years and my soreness I chalk up to age a little bit too

I can’t wait to run again and I think I’ll be all healed by tomorrow morning, but I’m still avoiding the stairs today because I want to wake up tomorrow and

a. Feel my quads without crying bloody murder
b. Run!

Fall wishlist

October 14, 2007

I seem to have fallen back into my non-fashion trend ways. This weekend I sat down and came up with this wishlist of my must-have items. These surely buck a bit of the fashion trends, but that’s how I like it.

fall/winter
Can’t make up my mind on those cowboy boots

fall/winter
Casual outfit

fall/winter
Work outfit

There’s not much on this list that I don’t “need.” I do have a thing for handbags, but that’s why I work, right? To be able to afford my habit.
